9 Questions You Have about Microdermabrasion

Since high school, I’ve struggled with acne. I didn’t have cystic acne but it was a mess… I tried tons of topical creams and different home remedies and as far as the doctor’s office goes, you can say that my parents are the typical Mexican parents that refuse to go to the doctor’s office. I tried changing my diet, washing my face multiple times a day with different cleansers but never found something that worked, then all of a sudden it went away.

I spent years with a clear face with minor breakouts but those breakouts always turned into hyperpigmentation, acne scars from where I would pick at them and as I got older, I felt like my pores got larger. As of late, I’ve been so discouraged with my skin due to a massive outbreak on my cheeks (high school Karla is back!) caused by stress. I went into skin care overload and tried plenty of remedies (more on that later) but one of the latest treatments I’ve tried is an organic microdermabrasion (Microderm for short) treatment at Luxe Nail & Beauty Bar in Brownsville, TX. They even let me ask thousands of questions about the whole procedure so I can give you all as much info as possible.

WHAT THE HECK IS MICRODERMABRASION?

“It’s a procedure that gently exfoliates and removes the upper layer of dead skin cells to reveal a cleaner, smoother & healthier complexion. It also stimulates blood flow, which increases collagen formation for firmer, younger-looking skin.” Can we say ‘hello’ to 21 again?!

WILL IT HURT?

“This treatment is a non-invasive & painless procedure that uses organic grains & a diamond tip with suction to exfoliate & remove dead skin.”

I have to say, from experience, it is completely painless. I loved the diamond tip portion of my treatment because you could feel the crystals that exfoliate your skin.

WHAT KIND OF SKIN PROBLEMS DOES MICRODERM TARGET?

“Microderm can help minimize fine lines and wrinkles, pore size, textured skin, acne scarring, sun and age spots, blackheads and whiteheads, stretch marks and acne.”

I personally went in for a mixture of these. My main issue is acne, acne scarring, and sun spots but who doesn’t want to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and pore size? Those were just a bonus.

HOW DOES IT HELP FIGHT ACNE?

“This treatment helps to remove excess sebum & cleans pores. We offer three different types of organic grains for our Microderm treatments: Tea Tree, Rose & Lavender. Tea tree is antibacterial & anti-inflammatory which can help fight acne. We also offer LED light therapy, which destroys acne-causing bacteria to minimize future breakouts. This service can be added on to any microderm treatment.”

The esthetician went ahead and analyzed my skin and recommended the tea tree grain for my skin. She will recommend a different grain depending on your skincare needs. I also got the LED light therapy to kill my acne-causing bacteria (again, my skin is going through a rough time)

WHAT IF I HAVE ACTIVE ACNE?

“If you have active, inflamed or cystic acne it is not recommended. We recommend getting our LUXE Facial before in order to help control and clear up your acne. Once cleared, you can receive a microderm treatment.”

Active acne is when your blemishes have pus that is visible to the naked eye.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS LIKE?

“Our licensed skin therapist will first give you a skin care consultation to ensure you are a candidate for the treatment. Once your skin is cleansed & analyzed, we then choose the best grain for your treatment, depending on your skin type & concerns. That grain is used to exfoliate your skin, we then use a diamond tip wand to further exfoliate & suction all the dead skin cells.”

LET. ME. TELL. YOU. They had me within the first step. The cleanser they used smelled like strawberries and I was in love! The whole process was very relaxing and I would do it again and again!

I SHOULDN’T GET THIS SERVICE DONE IF…

“You have active rosacea or acne, lupus, eczema, dermatitis, etc.”

If you are a candidate for this treatment, you can get it every 2 -4 weeks.

WHAT SHOULD I AVOID PUTTING ON MY FACE AFTER THIS?

“After this service, you should keep your skin hydrated and protected with SPF. Avoid makeup, working out and sweating the day of the treatment. Also, avoid waxing and direct sunlight”

I was super heartbroken to find out I couldn’t work out that day but after walking to my car and causing a little sweat in this Texas heat, I completely understood. It stung pretty bad and that was just a teeny tiny sweat.

HOW SHOULD MY SKINCARE TREATMENT CHANGE AFTER THIS SERVICE?

“After this treatment, your skin will have better product absorption, therefore we recommend using products that will target your particular skin concerns. For example using a serum for acne, anti-aging or uneven skin tone. Also adding an effective mineral based sunscreen is recommended.”

I’ve been going crazy with my skincare so I was already using these type of products but my skin was now able to fully absorb it better.

After going through the process I would recommend the treatment. It wasn’t only relaxing but it will improve my skin. My esthetician went ahead and let me know that I may not see immediate results since it does target from within. I have to go through a few sessions to see better results but I did notice my skin was brighter and I saw some difference in my dark spots.
